30% Surge in Settler Violence: Israel Intensifies West Bank Crackdown Amid Global Concerns of a Looming Uprising
A 30% rise in settler attacks marks a dangerous escalation in the Israeli occupation of the West Bank. Experts warn of systematic displacement, state-backed violence, and the risk of a third Palestinian intifada.

Since the beginning of 2025, Israeli violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank has sharply escalated, raising deep concerns among local and international observers.
Official Israeli data and field reports confirm that the attacks are not only increasing in number but are also becoming more organized and violent. This strategic shift suggests that the current Israeli government is not merely tolerating settler aggression.
Settlements: From Grassroots Movement to Government Policy
According to Israeli Forces Occupation Radio, 414 incidents of settler violence have been recorded so far this year. These include arson attacks, racist graffiti, and brutal physical assaults. More alarming than the volume of incidents is the qualitative shift in their nature; attacks are now more extreme, systematic, and deadly.
Israeli affairs analyst Ihab Jabareen explains that settlement expansion is no longer a fringe movement; it has become a central pillar of state policy.
Since Israel's disengagement from Gaza in 2005, settlement activity in the West Bank has taken on a retaliatory tone. Jabareen notes that between 2005 and 2015, Israeli settlers sought to “reclaim” what was lost in Gaza by accelerating expansion in the West Bank. From 2015 to 2020, settlement interests began to penetrate the Israeli political system.
By 2020, this influence had reached its peak, as far-right figures like Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben-Gvir gained control over Israel’s National Security and Settlement ministries, ushering in what Jabareen calls “the most fascist government in Israel’s history.”
Coordinated Assaults and Full-Scale Targeting of the West Bank
Palestinian Legislative Council Deputy Speaker Hassan Khreisha describes a “joint operations room” directing the Israeli assault on the West Bank. This room comprises the Israeli military, intelligence services, settler groups, and the Civil Administration, all working in concert to impose new facts on the ground.
In northern West Bank cities and refugee camps, Israeli forces are engaged in systematic destruction. Meanwhile, in the Jordan Valley, settlers are intensifying efforts to forcibly displace entire communities. Khreisha argues that these actions are laying the groundwork for the annexation of the entire West Bank.
He warns that the Israeli government believes the West Bank is the decisive battleground and is emboldened by prior support from U.S. President Donald Trump. As a result, Israeli forces have been executing coordinated campaigns across Jerusalem, the Jordan Valley, and both northern and southern regions of the West Bank.
Khreisha believes this trajectory will inevitably provoke a mass uprising, especially as daily violence, settler terror, and city-wide lockdowns push Palestinians to their breaking point. He also notes that the Palestinian Authority (PA) itself is under threat, despite being paralyzed and unable to respond effectively to these existential challenges.
International Inaction and Complicity: The PA and the Global Response
While the situation worsens on the ground, the international response has been mostly symbolic. During their recent summit in Brussels, European Union leaders issued a statement condemning the Israeli escalation in the West Bank and calling for an immediate halt to settler violence.
However, Dr. Mohamed Henid, a professor at the Sorbonne University in France, argues that such condemnations are largely ineffective. He notes a shift in European public opinion, especially among younger generations who increasingly reject the historical framing of Israel as a perpetual victim. “This generational shift scares pro-Israel lobbyists in Europe,” Henid explains, but he acknowledges that European policymakers remain constrained by Washington’s pro-Israel stance.
Khreisha echoes this sentiment, criticizing the EU’s tendency to adopt centrist positions. He recalls that the EU once proposed sanctions against violent settlers, measures that were later canceled following American objections.
Israel, fully aware of its deteriorating international image, is deliberately working to isolate the global community from what is happening in the West Bank. It engages with international initiatives, only to undermine or bypass them later.
Militarized Occupation and the Criminalization of Resistance
In a parallel development, Israel’s Shin Bet (internal security service) announced the discovery of what it called a “large Hamas infrastructure” in Hebron, allegedly planning imminent attacks on Israeli targets. The agency reported arresting over 60 operatives, dismantling 10 cells, and seizing weapons and explosives from an underground cache.
Hamas official Mahmoud al-Mardawi responded by reaffirming that resistance remains “the only path to ending the occupation.” He warned that the increasing repression in the West Bank would not go unanswered.
This military crackdown is part of a broader Israeli policy aimed at criminalizing Palestinian resistance while turning a blind eye to settler violence. It highlights Israel’s strategic approach not to de-escalate the conflict but to suppress Palestinian sovereignty through a combination of military force and settler colonization.
Is a Third Intifada Inevitable?
All signs point toward a dangerously escalating situation in the West Bank. With growing settlement expansion, state-backed settler terror, and paralyzed Palestinian institutions, the possibility of a third intifada looms large.
The Israeli government appears eager to finalize the de facto annexation of the West Bank, taking advantage of global political distractions and unwavering U.S. support. Meanwhile, Palestinians are left with dwindling options as they face mounting violence and displacement.
As international voices raise the alarm, one question remains: How much longer can the Palestinian people endure this layered assault without erupting into a widespread uprising, and will the world act before it's too late?
